ALLY, SHIPMAN SCRAPE THROUGH
23 Aug 2004 17:13
Fortune favoured Britain’s divers at the Athens Olympics on Monday when Tony Ally and Mark Shipman squeezed into tomorrow’s three-metre springboard semi-final by the slimmest of margins.
With just 18 of the 36 divers going through to the next phase, Ally qualified 16th while City of Sheffield teammate Shipman crept in by just 10 points to take the final berth.
Ally, the double Commonwealth silver medallist and former European Champion, notched up 401.52 points to Shipman’s score of 396.90. The pair dived together to take fifth place in the 3m springboard synchro seven days ago.
With the order of dives dictated by their position in the prelims, both Ally and Shipman will be at a disadvantage as they will have to diver earlier than their main rivals in Tuesdays semis.
Both British divers will need to finish inside the top 12 if they are to advance to Wednesday's final.
