Britain’s diving synchro silver medallists Peter Waterfield and Leon Taylor achieved their highest ever individual placings at an Olympic Games to finish just outside the medals in the 10m platform event in Athens.
Waterfield finished fifth in 669.24 points while Taylor amassed a score of 663.12 to finish one place lower in the final standings and bring the aquatics events in Athens to a close.
Hu Jia (China) collected the gold medal with Mathew Helm (Australia) taking the silver and Tian Liang (China) the bronze.
Waterfield and Taylor ended a 44-year medals famine for British diving with their silver medal in the 10m platform synchro on the opening day of the Games.
Not since 1960 when Elizabeth Ferris and Brian Phelps took bronzes in Rome had Britain won a diving Olympic medal.
Waterfield’s fifth place finish on Saturday night marks a remarkable improvement for the 23-year-old Southampton diver.
He was 33rd in the 10m platform event at the Sydney Olympics four years ago, which he followed up with a Commonwealth gold medal in Manchester two years later.
Taylor, originally from Cheltenham, was fifth in the platform at the World Championships in Barcelona last year and 13th in Sydney and 18th at the Atlanta Games in 1996.
