NEW WOMENS SWIMMING SESSIONS IN HULL
21 Mar 2007 11:38

Hull Leisure has added a new session to its pool programme so more people in Hull can participate in a women-only swimming environment and the benefits to health that exercise can bring.

Originally launched in November 2006 at Albert Avenue Pools, the pool is now offering swimming to all females and any boys up to the age of eight years.

The session takes place every Sunday from 10-11am in the small pool and any woman attending is guaranteed privacy, thanks to a specially installed blind and the provision of female lifeguards.

At the same time the large pool is open for public swimming so that male partners, husbands and boys over the age of 8 are also able to swim.

Entry costs £3 for adults and £1.40 for children, but for those looking to take the whole family swimming, a family ticket can be bought for just £7 (for up to two adults and three children). Under 5s swim free.

ASA Swim for Health Officer Phil Marshall believes the extension of the swimming sessions will see more people accessing the pool.

“There are many people in Hull who have previously been unable to access swimming because of their beliefs or because they are uncomfortable exercising in a mixed environment,” he said.

“Now all women can enjoy swimming as part of a healthy lifestyle. And because there is an open session at the large pool at the same time, all the family can enjoy the benefits of swimming.”

Swim for Health is a three-year programme across Hull and East Riding funded by the Amateur Swimming Association and the Department of Health which aims to increase physical activity in three key groups: local employees, residents over 50 and pre-school children and their families. It is also hoped that the project will raise awareness of the benefits of exercising in water to people outside of these target groups.
