With the improvements to the facilities, it is hoped that more people will be able to access swimming and diving in the region
Chair of the Executive Committee Phil Baker is grateful for all the efforts of the trustees and Sport England to help get the project off the ground:
“The news of this significant award from Sport England is a real boost for the people of Highworth and surrounding area," he said." The funding has enabled the fulfilment of a dream for many local citizens and ever since the pool was opened in 1968, people have been asking for a roof.
“Not only will we finally get a roof, but Sport England has also supported the trustees in continuing to provide the only 3m diving facility within a 35 mile radius. The trustees are grateful for all the effort that everyone has put into make the project possible. In all, £1.4m has been raised by the trustees and other contributors, including the National Sports Foundation, Swindon Borough Council, Biffa, Highworth United Reformed Church, Highworth Town Council, the Freke Norton Trust, the Broughton Trust and above all, many hundreds of local and not so local people; this is truly a community Social Enterprise.”
“The trustees would like to pay a special tribute to the work of Michael Wills MP who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure that together, Sport England and the Trustees could find a way forward and bring this dream to life.”
Jim Clarke, Regional Director of Sport England South West, said:
“Sport England is always looking for ways to improve the provision of sport and increase the number of people taking part in sport and active recreation. Part of that is improving and developing the existing facilities to ensure that participants are getting the maximum use and benefit from physical activity and motivating and inspiring others to take part and lead healthier lifestyles. Investment in grassroots sport is an investment in the future of the region. From young people to adults, swimming is one of the most popular and enjoyable sports to keep us healthy, fit and happy”.
Work starts on site on 4 June 2007 and will last approximately 36 weeks.
