Walsall Synchronised Swimming Club is celebrating its 35th birthday with a series of exciting events taking place throughout the year.
Founded in 1972 by Margaret Coyne, the club has gone from strength to strength and currently boasts over 100 members aged 5 and over. Walsall SSC has been competing on a national level for many years and has recently seen two girls make it onto British squads.
The club, to celebrate their milestone, has organised a variety of fun events including a sponsored swim, and a summer barbecue and fete, both events will take place during July.
At the end of the year the club will be putting on a Christmas display to showcase the work they have done throughout the year.
Head Coach Amy Moreton hopes their 35 year celebration will raise the profile of the club in the region and Moreton puts their longevity down to the integration of all age groups at the club.
“We have had a long history and everyone is proud to be part of the club and is looking forward to the celebrations this year,” she said. “We are the only synchro club in the Black Country and we see children travelling from across the West Midlands to train.”
“We run our club differently to most synchro clubs. We don’t get any subsidies from the council, all of our coaches are voluntary and all of our girls train together from the ages of 5 – 25. By training with the older girls we believe that our younger girls will be more motivated and can see what they can aspire to.”
The club is also currently working towards achieving Swim 21 accreditation – the Amateur Swimming Association’s club development model.
