More than 20 new Continuing Professional Development (CPD) seminars are available from the Institute of Swimming (IoS) from spring 2007.
The seminars, which range from three to five hours in length, have been introduced to complement the new UK Coaching Certificate (UKCC) structure.
A number of existing CPDs have been updated, while a series of new seminars has been developed to provide teachers and coaches with a better understanding of support services available to improve the performances of their athletes.
New additions include eight ‘Swim Strength’ seminars, which cover topics such as Strength and Conditioning, Land Training, Swiss Balls and Bands and Injury and Prevention, as well as seminars for swimming teachers, introducing them to aqua skills such as Flip n’ Fun and AquaFun.
For teachers and coaches working towards a licence, CPD seminars can count towards your accreditation. Attendees at any IoS seminar receive CPD points on a one point per hour basis.
In line with the introduction of the UK Framework for Coaching, the new CPD programme is quality assured and all seminars have been verified by an external assessment panel comprising specialists from each field.
ASA National Education Officer Paula Rice believes the new CPD programme offers a wider range of seminar topics.
“The introduction of the UKCC and the UK Framework for Coaching gave us an opportunity to review our CPD seminars,” she explained. “All seminars have been updated and we’ve added some great new sessions which give teachers and coaches an insight into different aspects of land training.
“This first wave of seminars is just the beginning for us. We are looking to build on the number of seminars we offer and ultimately we hope to provide an extensive list of seminars to support the UKCC qualifications.”
Employers and clubs interested in any of these seminars should speak to their IoS Regional Education Officer.
