More than 4,000 children have taken part in Aqua Skills Festivals organised by the Amateur Swimming Association (ASA) and the PE. School Sport and Club Links (PESSCL).
The Youth Sports Trust has announced that 4,315 school children took part in Aqua Skills Festivals and competitions between September 2006 and January 2007.
Aqua Skills Festivals are designed by the ASA and aim to introduce children to a of variety pool-based activities in an environment where they can experience sport in a competitive setting.
Designed for children aged 7-11, festivals involve elements in areas of swimming, diving, water polo and synchronised swimming, giving children an all-round introduction to aquatic sports, building on the skills they’ve learnt within their school swimming programme.
The festivals are part of a Government funded PESSCL strategy to help sport to be developed to a high standard and give competitive opportunities for all school children by 2010.
Children who wish to continue participating in a competitive framework in schools can do so through the English Schools Swimming Association (ESSA) who offer a comprehensive programme of events.
