ASA TO RECOGNISE VITAL VOLUNTEERS
01 Mar 2007 16:22

Nominations for this year’s ASA Aquaforce Volunteer Awards are now open with two new categories added for 2007.

Now in their second year, the Aquaforce Volunteer Awards recognise the people that give up their time to work at ASA clubs, counties and national events.

This year, as well as the Outstanding Contribution awards at club and county or regional level, two new awards have been added to recognise volunteers under the age of 25 and those who have given more than 25 years of service to the sport. The Young Volunteer and Long Service Awards aim to recognise people at both ends of the spectrum and extend the scope of the annual awards.

Volunteers are vital to the success of swimming and its associated disciplines and without the 45,000 plus volunteers that regularly get involved with the sport, it would not enjoy the success it currently does.

Director of English Programmes Anne Adams-King underlines their importance.

“The ASA relies on its army of volunteers to support the sport at a local, regional, national and international level,” she said. “All volunteers play a vital role in the success and continuation of our sport and by recognising them on a regional and national stage we go some way to rewarding them for their hard work.”

Last year, Josie Grange (Nova Centurion), Andrew Walker (Lowestoft and Oulton Broad), Jo John (Plymouth Leander) and Sue Clinton (Clevedon ASC) were all national finalists and were invited to the ASA’s Swimtastic Awards to celebrate and receive their awards.

This year, each national winner will be given a pair of tickets to the 2008 FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) in Manchester with dinner and accommodation included.

Nominations are now open in the following categories and should be submitted to your regional office by the 1 July.
-  Outstanding Contribution to Club
- Outstanding Contribution to County or Region
- Long Service Award
- Young Volunteer Award

All regional winners will be automatically nominated for consideration for the national award.
