Over 250 swimmers from 15 countries descended upon Sheffield at the weekend to take part in the British International Disability Swimming Championships.
World, European and British records were broken from day one of the competition.
Throughout the event athletes looked strong and were keen to build on their success from the Visa Paralympic World Cup.
Heather Frederiksen (S6, Eccles) broke two British records. She claimed her first record in the 50m Butterfly with a time of 38.87 secs. In the 50m Freestyle, Frederiksen broke the British record in the heat and then went even better in the final with a time of 37.40 secs.
Mulit-Paralympic medallist James Crisp (S9, City of Sheffield SC) swam a split time in the 2:08.11 in the 200m Freestyle which was good enough to break the World record, beating his previous record of 2:10.53 in the S9 class.
In the men’s 50m Freestyle final, the line up included record holders and Paralympic medallists. Paralympic champion Dave Roberts (S7, Swim Swansea) proved he is back to full fitness taking gold in a time of 28.79 secs, followed by Matt Walker (S7, Marple) finishing in 29.56 secs.
Claire Warne (SM5, Luton SC) claimed the British record in the 200m Individual Medley with a time of 4:04.71, knocking almost ten seconds off the previous record.
Cyprus athlete Carolina Pelendritou (SB12), broke the World record for the women’s 50m split time in the 100m Breaststroke twice, with times of 37.97 secs and 36.87 secs. She claimed a second World record for the full distance in a time of 1:19.91 secs, knocking almost two seconds off the previous time.
Formerly the DSE, Championships, the event has been renamed following a service agreement between British Disability Sport Events and British Swimming which sees the two organisations working together to improve the competitive structure within Britain and position the meet as a world class competition.
