THE HELPER CERTIFICATE - ADULTS OTHER THAN TEACHERS
The candidate must be a minimum of 16 years of age and directly associated with a school e.g. School Ancillary, Learning Support Staff, Nursery Nurse, Parent/Guardian/Carer/Grandparent
To equip an adult other than a teacher to assist in the delivery of a schools swimming programme.
1. To provide the Helper with a basic knowledge of the requirements for swimming at key stages 1 and/or 2.
Syllabus - Overview of the National Curriculum programme of study for swimming at key stage 2 - Relationship between the swimming component and other areas with physical education
2. To provide the Helper with technical knowledge, at a basic level
Syllabus: - Teaching beginners - Introduction to the 4 recognised strokes - Introduction & development of basic technique - Introduction to a variety of swimming equipment/aids
3. To equip the Helper with an awareness and understanding of health & safety in the pool environment
Syllabus: - Basic awareness of pool operating Management of the swimming environment - Knowledge of personal hygiene and cleanliness in the pool environment - Awareness of child protection issues
4. To equip the Helper with the basic skills and knowledge required to assist the Desginated Swimming Teacher (DST) in the delivery of teh swimming lesson
Syllabus: - Effective positioning on the poolside and in the water - Effective use of both verbal and visual communication - Effective and correct use of manual support - Introduction to a variety of teaching methods - Understanding of issues relating to professional conduct
The course will be non-assessed. An attendance certificate will be issued.

4 hours theoretical content
2 hours practical content to include; - The Helper working in the water and/or from the poolside** with an individual pupil/small group e.g. up to a maximum of 4 pupils. - Teaching demonstration by the Course Tutor illustrating the working relationship between the Helper and DST. ** see current ASA Guidance Document ‘Teaching from the Poolside’.
Flexibility is allowed to increase the amount of practical activity and thus reducing the 5 hours theoretical content.
The exact detail of what is covered in the practical session will be decided through consultation between the course tutor and the course organiser
Each course will normally comprise of a maximum of 20 candidates.
All administration will be through the ASA Workforce Development Office
Please note that from 1st April 2007 we are introducing a fee for PESSCL funded courses which are under capacity, to encourage full utilisation of the free resources. There will be a charge of £10 per candidate below the recommended number of candidates for the course, e.g an AOTT's course of 16 will be charged £40.
A holder of the ASA NCTP Helper Certificate is able to assist the designated swimming teacher (DST)* with the swimming programme delivered within a school environment. * The DST should be approved by the Headmaster of the school and should be considered competent to carry out this role effectively and safely. It is recommended that the DST should hold a recognised swimming qualification.
- An attendance certificate will be issued post course. There is no assessment of the candidate's ability on this course - Candidates may progress onto the ASA Level 1 Certificate for the Teaching of Swimming course

Delivery of the course syllabus will be planned by the Tutor in consultation with the LEA/LA Course Organiser (eg. Number of sessions, allocation of Practical and Theory sessions etc)
