Hot stuff at the Forge – ASA and youth championships

Roger Guttridge reports from the ASA and youth nationals in Sheffield

Hungarian Rhapsody – European swimming championships

Time to stop being surprised, time to banish the idea that ‘no-one would have predicted...’, time to expect the unexpected. Time to think outside the box that you thought was already outside the box. If you didn't perceive the fastest European championships in history in that way, probably best to don a flowery hat, pull the strap down firmly under your chin and do John Trudgen proud as you glide off into aquatic oblivion.

The 28th European Championships was no place for those unprepared to look reality in the face and turn to steely resolve for comfort. Four world, seven European and 23 championship records fell during seven days of the fastest, closest racing the continent has ever witnessed: in 21 finals eighth place or qualification for a final would have won at least a bronze medal just two years ago in Madrid, 2004; in nine events, the bronze medal swim from 2004 would not have made the final in 2006; 18 finals produced the fastest gold ever; 28 finals produced the fastest bronze ever; 22 nations reached the podium, 11 sharing gold.
