It’s Swiiimmm-tastic! Swimtastic gala and dinner It was an important day for the Collinson family, for all sorts of reasons, when mum and dad Collette and Simon decided to take their boys to swimming lessons. ‘Three of our sons have disabilities and have no sense of danger,’ says Collette, from Newton-le-Willows, Merseyside. ‘They are prone to jump into water and not realise the danger so it’s really important that they learn to swim.’
The oldest of the five Collinson boys is 10-year-old Alexander, who has autism and needs one-to-one special needs lessons. ‘He can swim two lengths without stopping and has his duckling awards and all the badges up to level 3,’ said Collette.
His brother Dominic, aged nine, has both attention deficit disorder and autism. In practice, this means he does not always understand things and sometimes struggles to keep up. But Dominic has found swimming hugely helpful. ‘He’s on level 4 and can swim at least a length of each stroke and dive’, said his mum. ‘He’s a marvelous swimmer and he even swam against Steve Parry in a race recently!’
Eight-year-old Joseph is already a level 5 swimmer who also plays in a football team while Jonathan, aged seven, is on level 3. Then comes five-year-old David, who has Down’s syndrome and is having one-to-one lessons and working towards his duckling award.
