MAIN FEATURE

Setting the pace

Nova Centurion’s 18-year-old Rebecca Adlington got within less than a second of Sarah Hardcastle’s 1986 800m freestyle British record at the ASA National Championships this summer. Now she’s ranked 6th in the world and is being tipped for Olympic success.

Imagine what it must be like to be one of Britain’s brightest young swimming prospects, with everyone expecting you to be in London in July 2012 lining up to win a medal. As if the pressure of the Olympics isn’t enough, a home Olympics will be something else.

Since Britain won the bid to host the 2012 Olympics it seems that everyone is talking about the Games. There’s a huge expectation that the effect of being the host nation will mean we will win more medals than ever before. The British Olympic Association is hanging its hat on finishing 4th in the medals table, that’s likely to need 18 gold medals and a big improvement from 9th place in Athens 2004…
