MAIN FEATURE

Second chance – James Goddard

As any athlete will tell you, fourth in a major final is the worst place to finish.  For Britain’s James Goddard, however, the Olympic agony came in triplicate.  In the moments that followed the 200m backstroke final in Athens in 2004, the former European junior IM champion was thrown into an emotional rollercoaster which he has never fully got over. After going into the race with high expectations of a silver medal, he first thought he had missed out altogether, then became one of the shortest-lived medallists in Olympic history before once again missing out.  He remembers the events in Athens all too vividly.
