the asa Synchronised Swimming Officials Examinations
The ASA has a list of Synchronised Swimming Officials who are competent to officiate at National and International events, consisting of Referees, Judges and Scorers. All appointments to the ASA list of Synchronised Swimming Officials will be made or discontinued at the discretion of the ASA Committee on the recommendation of the Synchronised Swimming Technical Committee. All officials on the list must be members of affiliated clubs.
Promoters are advised that, in their interests and those of their competitors, the principal officials should be drawn from the list of officials maintained by the ASA, the Regions and other competent bodies.
BASIC AND ADVANCED SKILL ASSESSOR TRAINING
Training of Basic Skills Assessors In order for skill levels to be assessed:
There will be 2 levels of Skills Assessor: 1) Basic Skill Assessor 2) Advanced Skill Assessor
Basic Skills Assessor (BSA) n Can assess skill levels 1,2 and 3
Eligibility n All candidates must attend a one day training course to qualify as a Basic Skills Assessor n Candidates must be over 16 years of age.
Advanced Skills Assessor (AdSA) Can assess all 5 skills levels
Eligibility n Basic Skills Assessors who have assessed at least 2 assessment days. n Candidates must be over 17 years of age.
The one-day course will consist of theoretical and practical lectures and will include an examination.
All Skills Assessors (Basic and Advanced) will under go a mentoring/monitoring process by a tutor appointed by the Regional Skill Level Organiser.
Any Skills Assessors (Basic or Advanced) who is not assessing at the required level will be mentored and may be asked to attend further training.
Senior Skill Assessor (SSA) Ensures Skill Assessments are carried out fairly.
Eligibilty Candidates must be both Advanced Skill Assessors and a National Judge
The one day course will consist of theoretical and practical lectures and will include an examination.
JUDGES
JUDGE Training There will be four levels of Judges
(i) General (G) (ii) B judge (B) (iii) A judge (A) (iv) Basic Judge
The grading of the judge will depend on their evaluation at competitions. Current Level 1 (L1) and Level 2 judges (L2) will be assigned a level according to their evaluation in the past two years.
Promotion Yearly, the judges’ working party will review evaluations. To gain promotion, in any 4 years (maximum) period, judges must receive 4 evaluations in the category 3/2 overall (or higher) and at least 3 for non-bias.
General B and A judges will be eligible to judge at any level of competition. The competition promoter may select judges as appropriate.
Training Course Trainee judges must attend a 2-day training course. Syllabus to include: l Day 1. Technical aspects to include age-group figures and technical elements for technical routines. l Day 2. Judging free routines, technical routines and free routine combinations. Post Course Assessment All trainee judges must judge or shadow judge and be evaluated one competition. This competition must include at least figures and free routines. To achieve General judge status, trainee judges must attain category 3/2 (or higher) overall and at least 3 for non-bias.
Eligibility to Attend Course (i) Ex district (or above) swimmers who are over the age of 18 and can demonstrate they are still involved in the sport. (ii) Any person holding a Grade A Examiners either figures or routines (iii) Advanced Skill Assessors (iv) Holders of the ASA Level 2 Teachers Certificate
Current Level 1 and 2 Judges All judges are invited to submit a CV of their judging experience for the last 4 years. From judging experience and evaluations, judges will be awarded a new category G, B or A
Technical Judges To complete the judge education programme to G judge, technical judges must attend the routine judges training day and then be evaluated judging free routines.
Basic Judges Course Eligibilty Candidates must be over 16 years of age A one day course introducing potential Judges to judging figures and routines. There is no examination.
REFEREE Training Candidates should register with the Administrator for the ASA Technical Synchronised Swimming Committee to train to become a Referee.
1. Candidates should be an A Judge before they can qualify as a Referee but during this time should complete the following: 2. Referee or be Assistant Referee at 3 inter club or county events covering a combination of events, figures, technical and free routines. Complete a form detailing involvement in the Event and action taken (forms supplied on registration). 3. Attend a one-day (5 hour) course. Content: Laws, Situations, Conducting Judges Meetings
Examination 4. 1-hour (open book) theory paper on application of Laws i.e. situations. To pass, all situations must be dealt with within the Laws of the Sport (FINA/ASA). 5. 5-minute presentation of a figure. 5-minute presentation on either judging routines or general points for the judges to consider. Specific presentations to be drawn at the beginning of the training day. Both presentations to be made as if in a Referee’s meeting, ideally to the group of candidates. Assessment will be by 2 qualified referees who may, or may not have been involved in tutoring of the training course. 6. The examination may be held on the same day as the training course, or at a future date, but must be taken within one (l) year of the training course. 7. Following successful completion of the training day and examination, candidates will be allocated a Mentor (experienced referee) who will observe them refereeing one event covering at least 2 of the following events: figures, technical routines, free routines. A report will be submitted to the Administrator for the ASA Technical Synchronised Swimming Committee with recommendations to pass as a Referee, be mentored for another event or shadow another event before refereeing a further event.
SCORER
Pre-requsite Candidates must be at least 16 years of age at the time of the examination.
Requirements The organiser should prepare in advance a set of score sheets (Official ASA Competition entry forms) exactly as they would be requested for a competition for figures, solos, duets and teams, for each candidate, i.e. insert figures, degrees of difficulty, for all “competitors” and swimming order. Also for solos, duets and teams to use all the swimmers at least once. Sheets for 12 swimmers for figures; (11 of these swimmers have solos but only the top 8 will qualify to swim their solos) 4 Duets (top 3 to swim); and 2 Teams.
Courses All aspects of scoring should be covered in details with time allowed for practise on all sections. All ASA rules for synchronised swimming which are applicable to scoring should be discussed and questions encouraged at all stages, candidates should be provided with a Degree of Difficulty calculator sheet.
Examination Candidates are issued with the prepared sheets. The instructor should dictate the marks as if giving judges’ marks at a competition. After the figure section is completed a short time must be allowed for the candidates to complete totalling, and arrange the sheets into result order and mark the position on the sheets. Figure marks are transferred as appropriate to the Routine sheets and select swimmers for solos and duets as above. The routine sections are then completed in a similar fashion and time allowed at the end to put the sheets in order and mark the placings.
Staff, etc. (a) The course and examination shall be conducted by a fully qualified and experienced National Scorer (who also marks the papers) who is accompanied by a second qualified scorer who does the scoring with the candidates to provide a master copy for checking purposes. (b) Scorers and Course must be approved by the appropriate Regional Synchro Secretary. (c) Candidates must not have more than TWO basic mistakes in the Figure section and TWO basic mistakes in the Routine section. (d) After the examination, all sheets are collected, marked and forwarded to the Regional Synchro Secretary who refers them to the ASA Synchronised Swimming Committee for approval of all passes. (e) Average times required for the course and examination are 2 to 3 hours for each section.
