Favourite Event: 400m freestyle
Finest ever performance/Why: Qualifying for Beijing was special but my PB at German Open where I set the world record for 400m freestyle has to be the best. It was on the last day of competition after a long weekend and didn’t really expect to do anything like that.
First senior international meet: Danish Open 2006
Role models: On the team it would be Sascha Kindred who I’ve looked up to for a while. He always encouraged me. Internationally it would be Wang the Chinese swimmer. I want to beat him but I do look up to him because he is so good
My aspirations are: To get gold in 400m freestyle at Beijing and get on the podium for every event I can.
Tip for the top: Believe in yourself, that’s got to be the most important thing. Have confidence and work to the best of your ability every session.
Life after swimming: Coming up to my first Games it’s a bit early to say.
Music: I listen to absolutely everything. Nobody has got a wider range of music on their I-pod than me.
If I wasn‘t a swimmer I would be: Still at school. Probably something in sport. I’ve never really thought about it. Describe yourself in three words: Determined, tough and modest.
Would most like to meet: Rowan Atkinson
Most prized possession: My bed
Biggest influence on career: A number people – my parents, my coach and everyone on the GB team because they are so supportive – Team Hynd
Sporting Relations: It’s a sporty family. My brother used to play football and he swims at Midland level. My mum used to swim. My dad is very musical.
