The road to Rome – British Gas swimming championships

British Gas could not have wished for a more spectacular start to their six-year partnership with British Swimming – a world record on day one followed over the next four days by three other European, two other Commonwealth and a total of 11 British records. But this is ‘only a start’, according to national performance director Michael Scott. ‘This has been a very positive step forward,’ he said. ‘The momentum from Beijing has been carried forward and obviously we have a higher base to start from. But we need to stress that it’s a long four-year journey and anything can happen. Let’s not get too excited. We need to be diligent, to work hard and to recognise that all our competitors will go faster as well.’

A place in Britain’s team for the World Championships in Rome was on offer to all race winners at Sheffield. The swimmer with the second-best time from this event and the Scottish nationals in June will also be considered for selection.
