For the aquatic disciplines to succeed and develop we rely profoundly on the skills, knowledge and commitment of it’s volunteer workforce.
The current level of personal commitment given to the aquatic disciplines is immense. Although it is difficult to accurately quantify how many volunteer hours are given to the sport, there are over 30,000 volunteer members of the Amateur Swimming Association.
To celebrate the National Volunteer Week from the 1st to 7th June 2007 the Amateur Swimming Association has launched a ‘Thank You’ campaign to recognise the exceptional dedication and outstanding achievements of the volunteer workforce.
To launch the campaign six volunteers were invited to attend the Paralympic World Cup on 12th May 2007 to say thank you for their outstanding commitment to disability swimming. The nominated volunteers were invited to attend an all expenses paid trip to the Paralympic World Cup for themselves and a guest.
Ruth Gunter (Southampton), Elizabeth Christian (Ipswich) (see below for profiles of these two volunteers), Mary Butler (Nottingham) and Neil Smith (Birmingham) were nominated by the ASA Technical Disability Swimming Committee in appreciation of their achievement within the sport, while Nick Ibrahim (London) (see below for profile) and David Harman (Hampshire) were invited by National Development Officer Carole Barrough as a thank you for their commitment to disability swimming.
Four of the six volunteers were able to attend and, along with a guest, were provided with dinner, bed and breakfast at the Manchester Hilton.

Over the next year, the ASA will invite volunteers from all disciplines to a variety of competitive events.
Everyone can take part in National Volunteer Week by organising your own way of saying thank you.
