Miley wins Britain's first medal of Glasgow 2018

3 Jul 2018

Britain's first medal in the pool at Glasgow 2018 came in the form of a bronze for Hannah Miley in the 400m Individual Medley.

The Scot edged out British team mate Aimee Wilmott to a podium place in a close fought final that saw France's Fantine LeSaffre take gold and Italy's Ilaria Cusinato in silver.

The 28-year-old said: "I’m very happy. Obviously I would have loved a different colour medal but it just comes down to the race and it’s so nice to be able to come away with a medal especially on the last couple of metres,

"I’ve been touched out so many times.  I raced at my first European Championships back in 2006 and here I am medalling in 2018 at the age of almost 29 and it feels pretty good, especially for someone my size.

"In sport you don’t always get it your own way and being touched out is just part of that. You just have to deal with it. You can’t hide from it or shy away from it and feel sorry for yourself. I just have to accept that is what happens and use that to my advantage to learn from it."

Walking out with the fire behind the blocks but hearing the crowd makes such a big difference. If people are watching on TV undecided about whether or not to come down it really does make such a big difference having that crowd there. The spectacle itself is important for people to get involved with. While we’ve got European Short Course in 2019 these events don’t come round often.

Wilmott said: "I knew it was close coming down the last 25 metres and was just trying to get my hand on the wall first.

"I only knew when I looked up how lose it actually was."

In the 100m breaststroke there was British dominance for the second time in the day with Adam Peaty and James Wilby securing the first two final places.

The 4x 100m freestyle relay team, made up of Anna Hopkin, Siobhan-Marie O'Connor, Ellie Faulkner and Freya Anderson, narrowly missed out on a medal, when Denmark just touched the wall before the home team. France took the gold and the Netherlands silver.

Nick Pyle secured a new personal best swim in the 50m backstroke semi but was not able to secure a place in tomorrow's final, coming in 12th overall.

Alys Thomas narrowly missed out on a spot in the final of the 100m butterfly in ninth place, with Charlotte Atkinson in 14th.
