Peaty impresses home crowd

20 May 2016

Adam Peaty made his return to the pool and led the way into the 50m Breaststroke final on the fifth day of action at the LEN European Aquatics Championships.

The semi-finals of the 50m Breaststroke saw both Peaty and Ross Murdoch secure places in the final with wins in their respective semi-finals.

World bronze medallist Murdoch took to the water in the first semi-final and touched home first to secure his lane in the final.

World Champion and record holder Peaty controlled the second race from start to finish as he showed his pedigree to set up a British head-to-head for the final.

Peaty said: “I was confident it was going to be a fast time. I’m super stoked with that race though to be honest.

“You never know with a 50m race, one mistake and it can all be over but it worked out just right for me and Ross tonight. I have a couple of hours to train to see what I can do to improve. I’m going to go into it and enjoy the race.”

In the women’s 50m Backstroke semi-finals Georgia Davies and Francesca Halsall lined up in lanes four and five in search of a finals berth.

Both went in semi-final two and completed a British one-two to automatically qualify for tomorrow evening’s final on the penultimate day of action in London.

Halsall said: “I had really good start on that race. I used that to my advantage and carried it through to the finish.

“It’s great to be able to race here and in front of a home crowd as well.”

Halsall completed her swim in a personal best time of 27.80 and added afterwards: “I’m looking forward to seeing what I can do tomorrow night.”

Georgia Davies touched behind Halsall to also book her place in the final.

Davies said, “It was a decent swim, I’m just going to keep doing what I’m doing and working hard towards my end goal. I’ve been working on a few things with my stroke so we’ll see what happens tomorrow.”

Personal best times were achieved by Tim Shuttleworth in the Men's 800m Freestyle final (7:50.52) and Molly Renshaw in the Women's 200m Breaststroke final (2:23.18).
