Ward strikes gold on opening night in Sheffield

City of Leeds swimmer Tia Ward claimed double gold on the first night of finals at the British Summer Championships 2016 as Sheffield served up an exciting session of racing.

Ward opened her medal account early in the session as she touched home first in the Women’s 13/14 years 200m Freestyle final.

Her second national honour of the night was claimed in the Women’s 400m Individual Medley she controlled the race from start to finish which ensured her a comfortable victory. Silver went to Niamh Hofland of Royal Wolverhampton School and bronze went to Alexandra bartley of City of Birmingham.

The Men’s 400m Freestyle 19+ years final was taken by Nicholas Grainger (City of Sheffield) after a closely fought race in his home pool. Silver went to Jay Lelliott of Bath University and Bronze to Caleb Hughes of Loughborough University.

In the Men's 400m Free 17/18 years age group the national title was won by Millfield’s Brodie Williams. He finished ahead of Tom Derbyshire (Royal Wolverhampton School) and Samuel Budd (City of Sheffield). 

Hatfield swimmer Luke Turley led the field home in the 16 years 400m Freestyle and was joined on the podium by teammate Nathan Hughes and Jakob Goodman of Millfield.

Samuel Osbourne of City of Birmingham delivered a dominant race and set the pace from start to finish. He took the win in the Men’s 400m Freestyle 15 years final, Archie Goodburn (Warrender Bath Club) took silver and Joel Thompson (Shieverers) was nudged into bronze.

The 13/14 years 400m Freestyle saw a decisive swim from City of Leicester’s William Bell. He distanced himself from the rest of the line-up and ensured a comfortable victory in the open final of the night. Charlie Hutchinson (Ellesmere College Titans) was second and Ioan Evans (Bridgend County) touched third.

Sheffield-based Maya Westlake saw of the competition in a race that went to the touch to secure a home pool victory over Lucy Hope of Edinburgh University and Bethany Firth of Newcastle in the 19+ years Women’s 200m. 

Kathryn Greenslade (Preston SC) soared to victory in the 17/18 years race as she finished several body lengths ahead of the rest the field. European Junior medallist Holly Hibbott (Stockport Metro) was the second place finisher and Hannah Featherstone (Sedgefield) placed third.

Team Ipswich swimmer Rebecca Sherwin took the win and the gold in the 16 years 200m Freestyle final. Silver went to Elizabeth Harris (Stockport Metro) and bronze to Jane Brown (Newcastle Swim Team).

The 15 years age group 200m Freestyle race closed with Freya Anderson of Ellesmere College Titans on top. Next to touch was Emily Large and third was Annalea Dawson both of Newcastle Swim Team.

The opening Para-swimming final of the night saw Tom Hamer (S14) (National Performance Centre/City of Manchester) take the win in the Men’s MC 200m Freestyle with 948 points. Matthew Gibson (S14) (Derwentside) was second with 790 points and Liam Spence (S14) (Kingston Hull) touched home third with 728 points.

In the Women’s MC 200m Free Hatfield’s Louise Fiddes (S14) claimed gold with 712 points ahead of Danielle Hartin (S14) of Basildon with 666 points. 

The Men’s 19+ years 100m Breaststroke final belonged to Charlie Attwood of Bath University. Luke Davies (City of Birmingham) and Tristan Slater (Millfield) ranked second and third respectively.

City of Oxford’s David Murphy delivered a gold worthy swim in the 17/18 years 100m Breaststroke final as he took the win. Silver went to Edward Baxter of Cockermouth and bronze to Jarvis Parkinson of Doncaster Dartes.

Callum Smart (City of Oxford) was first to the touch to seal a national gold in the 100m Breaststroke 16 years final ahead of Harry Devlin (York City) and teammate Connor Bryan.

The 15 years 100m Breaststroke gold went to Oliver Taverner (Mount Kelly), silver and bronze went to Archie Goodburn (Warrender) and Jonathan Milner (City of Leeds) respectively.

A national title for Nofio Clwyd’s Rhodri Williams in the 13/14 years final Breaststroke final. He was accompanied on the podium by Thomas Leman of RTW Monson and William Mitchel of Millfield.

Candice Hall (City of Leicester) sealed a gold in the Women’s 19+ years 400m Individual Medley. She completed the swim ahead of Amber Keegan (City Sheffield) and Lucy McKenzie (Stockport Metro).

Fresh from the European Juniors in Hungary, Loughborough University’s Abbie Wood completed the eight laps of Ponds Forge pool to seal the win in the 17/18 years 400m Individual Medley final. Rosie Rudin (Nova Centurion) and Constance Dean (Maidenhead) were next to the touch.

Tazmin Pugh was the victorious in the 16 years 400m Individual Medley final to take gold ahead of Sheffield based swimmer Amy Bell and Nikki Miller of South Lanarkshire.

British Championship medallist Emily Large (Newcastle Swim Team) took gold in the Women’s 15 years 400m Individual Medley final. Sophia Wilson of Guildford City and Ciara Schlosshan were next to the touch.

James Hollis (S10) of Loughborough University took the touch in the Men’s MC 100m Butterfly final with a point’s total of 864. Kahoru Harazawa (S10) of Beckenham finished second with 850 points and Jack Bridge (S10) of City of Sunderland with 604.

Rio-bound Claire Cashmore (S9) of Wyre Forest took gold in the Women’s MC 100m Butterfly, a total of 856 points secured the win. Romford Town’s Amy Marren (S9) scored 819 to and took silver. Alice Tai (S10) of Bournemouth College finished third with 772 points in third.

The final Men’s event of the session was the 50m Backstroke, with Charlie Boldison of the University of Stirling taking the victory in the 19+ years final. City of Sheffield swimmer Elliot Clogg took gold in the 17/18 years 50 Backstroke final.

James Eddy of Wycombe District Swimming Club touched home fasted in the 50m Backstroke final of the 16 years age group in a new British Age Group of 26.53.

The 15 years final was claimed by Leighton Mayers of Ellesmere College Titans. Jacob Davies of Chase Swimming Club saw of the competition in the 13/14 years 50m Backstroke final took gold.
