If you are seeking to understand the classification status of a para-swimmer then read on for the relevant international and British Swimming letter codes and definitions.

World Para Swimming – International Classification

N (New) Indicates an athlete who has not undergone a World Para Swimming international classification but may have a national classification.

R (Review) Indicates an athlete who has undergone a World Para Swimming international classification and has obtained a classification for international competition, however will require a classification review according to the classification rules of the sport.

C (Confirmed) Indicates an athlete who has undergone a World Para Swimming international classification and obtained a classification for international competition and does not require any further classification according to the classification rules of the sport.

NE (Not Eligible) Indicates an athlete who fails to meet the eligibility criteria for disability swimming. This does not question the presence of a genuine impairment.


British Swimming – National Classification

BS (National) Indicates a classification carried out by National classifiers where no further classification is required according to the classification rules of the sport.

R (Review) Indicates an athlete who has undergone a classification and obtained a classification for national competition, however will require a classification review according to the classification rules of the sport.

NE (Not eligible) As above.
