Britain’s swimmers had a strong first morning of the World Championships in Budapest with seven athletes progressing into this evening’s semi-finals and finals.
James Guy (National Centre Bath) put in an impressive swim in the Men’s 400m Freestyle and booked a place in tonight’s world title decider.
“I led that race most of the way. A 3:45 in the morning - I’m happy with that, it felt relaxed so I’m looking forward to this evening,” said Guy.
Olympic Champion Adam Peaty (National Centre Loughborough) went in the final heat of the Men’s 100m Breaststroke and qualified fastest for the semi-finals.
Team mate Ross Murdoch (University of Stirling) delivered a new season’s best time of 59:51 to progress as the seventh fastest qualifier.
It was two out of two in the Women’s 200m Individual Medley as both Siobhan-Marie O’Connor (National Centre Bath) and Hannah Miley (University of Aberdeen) both put in strong swims to secure semi-final berths.
Miley also posted a season best time of 2:11.32 in the final heat of the 200m IM where she lined up against Olympic Champion and hometown favourite, Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu.
Ben Proud (Plymouth Leander) topped his heat in the Men’s 50m Butterfly to qualify fourth fastest and will return for the semi-finals in the Danube Arena this evening.
Team debutant Alys Thomas (Swansea Aquatics) went in the Women’s 100m Butterfly and ranked 15th at the end of the heats for a place in the semi-final.
