If you are seeking to understand the classification status of a para-swimmer then read on for the relevant international and British Swimming letter codes and definitions.

World Para Swimming (WPS) – International Classification Status

  • N (New): An athlete that may have a British Swimming classification and is allocated Sport Class Status New (N) by World Para Swimming prior to attending the Athlete’s first WPS classification. An Athlete with Sport Class Status New (N) must attend an Evaluation Session prior to competing at any World Para Swimming Sanctioned Competition unless World Para Swimming determines otherwise.
  • R (Review): An athlete with Sport Class Status Review (R) must complete classification prior to competing at any subsequent World Para Swimming Sanctioned Competition unless World Para Swimming determines otherwise.
  • FRD (Fixed Review Date): An athlete with Sport Class Status Review with a Fixed Review Date (FRD) will be required to attend a classification at the first opportunity after the relevant Fixed Review Date. E.G. an athlete with Sport Class Status Review with a Fixed Review Date of 2020 will be required to attend an Evaluation Session at his first opportunity after 01 January 2020.
  • C (Confirmed): An athlete with Sport Class Status Confirmed (C) is not required to undergo any further classification (except for the provisions in the Classification Rules & Regulations concerning Protests, Medical Review and changes to Sport Class criteria).
  • NE (Not Eligible): An athlete who has an eligible impairment that does not comply with minimum impairment criteria for para swimming will be allocated Sport Class Not Eligible (NE).

British Swimming (BS) – National Classification Status

  • R (Review) An athlete with Sport Class Status Review (R) must complete classification prior to competing at any subsequent para swimming competition unless British Para-Swimming determines otherwise.
  • FRD (Fixed Review Date): An athlete with Sport Class Status Review with a Fixed Review Date (FRD) will be required to attend an Evaluation Session at the first opportunity after the relevant Fixed Review Date. E.G. an athlete with Sport Class Status Review with a Fixed Review Date of 2020 will be required to attend an Evaluation Session at his first opportunity after 01 January 2020.
  • C (Confirmed): An athlete with Sport Class Status Confirmed (C) is not required to undergo any further Athlete Evaluation (except for the provisions in the Classification Rules & Regulations concerning Protests, Medical Review and changes to Sport Class criteria).
