London 2019 confirmed as record breaker

The London 2019 World Para Swimming Allianz Championships at the London Aquatics Centre is set to be the largest on record.

With over 650 athletes and 80 countries taking part at the week-long championships, the event has the largest number of competitors in action across 162 races, showcasing the world’s best para swimmers just under a year out from the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.

Starting on Monday 9th September, the first of the heats take place in the morning, with the opening ceremony taking place at 5.15pm ahead of the first World Champions of the week being crowned (See spectator information here).

The Great Britain team is 24 athletes strong with fifteen of those set to make their debut World Championships appearance, and eleven Paralympic medallists among those selected.

Current Paralympic and European title holder in the Men’s S7 400m Freestyle, Mikey Jones, will be going for the clean sweep in the event at his first world’s and commented: 

“I’m really looking forward to walking out for my main event in front of the home crowd and hearing the roar. It’d be great to have as many people down there as we can to get behind the team and create that fantastic atmosphere witnessed here in 2012.”

With a number of sessions already at capacity, the London Aquatics Centre is primed to generate new memories, adding to the legacy of the 2012 Paralympics aquatics programme staged at the same venue.
