GBR narrowly miss marathon medal

Britain’s marathon swimming quartet finished fifth in the 5km Relay Team Event in Lake Balaton of the seventh day of the FINA World Championships.

Stirling-based Danielle Huskisson swam the opening leg securing a strong position for the GBR four.

Toby Robinson, who trains at National Centre Loughborough, asserted his control on the race by moving into first position and pulling away from the rest of the field. At the halfway stage there was clear water between Robinson and the chasing pack as he handed over to Loughborough team-mate Tim Shuttleworth.

After his bronze in the Men’s 5km earlier in the Championships, Shuttleworth continued to demonstrate fine form by pulling further away from the rest of the field to secure a lead of over more than 37 seconds.

It was a brave final lap by Alice Dearing (National Centre Loughborough) but she was eventually chased down by male competitors from four nations; France, the USA, Italy and Australia, who overtook towards the finish.

Gold went to the quartet of France, with silver and bronze won by the USA and Italy respectively.
