Divers Freddie Woodward and Jordan Houlden made their European Championship debuts in the Men’s 1m Prelims at the London Aquatics Centre and both booked themselves a spot in the final.
Woodward was the first of the two Brits to take to the board and a consistent set of dives saw him finish seventh in the preliminary rankings with a points total of 356.25.
“It’s exactly what I wanted to do. I’m very happy indeed,” said Woodward. “It was a really steady performance and it gives me plenty of room to go into the final with later.
“This is a wonderful competition venue and it’s my first time competing here which is really exciting for me, being in front of a home crowd makes a massive difference as well.
Houlden, who also made his senior international debut at the Championships, had to wait until the final diver to know whether he progressed through to the final. Prelims closed with Holden ranked 12th on a score of 332.40.
Houlden said, “It’s great to get into the final and it felt like a pretty good prelim. There were some nerves but the crowd was really loud and that helped.
“We’ve been training at the pool for a few days but I felt the atmosphere change and that was great for me.”
Woodward and Houlden will line up against the 2015 European Champion Mathieu Rosset of France and the event favourite Illya Kvasha of Ukraine.
