Daley wows home crowd with gold in London

3 May 2015

On the final evening of the FINA/NVC Diving World Series the temperature reached fever pitch as Tom Daley turned up the heat in the final of the Men’s 10m platform for gold.

The British Diving Team enjoyed one of their most successful medal hauls at the competition with six medals in total across the event - gold, two silvers and three bronze medals.

In a near flawless list of dives, the Olympic bronze medallist stayed calm and composed under pressure producing his best ever score of 102.60 for his brand new twister dive.

The 20-year old, who trains at the London Aquatics Centre with coach Jane Figueiredo, tallied a score of 554.05 - a clear 36 point margin between himself and closest rival China’s Jian Yang (518.75).

Daley said: “It's always amazing to come and compete in front of the home crowd and be here in London, where I train every day. All my friends and family were here watching.

“It's the top divers in the world. It was a great chance to get out there, compete against the best and I'm so happy to not just have won, but I've won by quite a margin, which is really good.

“The main aim for this year is to qualify my Olympic spot. There's still lots of things I need to improve on. I think I've still got another 50, 60 points in the tank.”

China’s Qiu Bo completed the podium with 506.60 points for bronze.

Following in Daley’s wake, new British pairing of Georgia Ward and Matty Lee won the silver medal in the 10m Mixed Synchro with a confident performance in only their second competition.

They won bronze in Canada at the Grand Prix and showed their confidence as they stood on the boards in front of the home crowd.

Ward and Lee scored a total of 331.14 to take up their position on the podium.

Lee said: “Tonight was unreal; it was very unexpected. I love training and competing with Georgia and I think that really helps us to be successful together.”

Ward said: “We get along really well so when you go out and compete you feel a lot more comfortable. The home crowd was absolutely amazing. We’ve only done one competition together so far so to come away from today with a World Series medal is incredible.”

China’s Junjie Lian and Yajie Si took the gold in 340.29, with Russian pair of Nikita Shleikher and Yulia Timoshinina (331.14) took bronze.

Seemingly struck with podium fever, Britain’s Tonia Couch kept the pace earning her hat-trick of 2015 World Series bronze medals in the Women’s 10m platform final.

Couch showed her experience bouncing back from sixth in the table to second after a stunning 84.80 point dive in round two to collect a total point score of 357.80.

The 25 year old said: “My emotions are crazy right now, I’m so pleased and a little bit speechless. This is my third individual medal in a row.

“This morning to make it into the final was the best I've done for a while, competing against Megan who won the last World Series last week and competing against two Chinese. I knew I had to put something special in tonight and I did.”

The gold and silver medals were decided by just 0.45 points as Canadian diver Rosaline took her first FINA/NVC Diving World Series crown with 379.15 ahead of China’s Huixia Liu (378.70).

Britain’s Sarah Barrow was also in the mix scoring 335.00 for fifth place.
