Gallantree finishes 10th to bring Worlds campaign to a close

1 Aug 2015

Rebecca Gallantree brought the curtain down on her Kazan 2015 World Championship campaign with a 10th place finish in the 3m Springboard final.

Competing at her fourth Worlds, the 30-year old scored 289.00 as Shi Tingmao won China’s eighth gold medal of the competition on 383.55.

Gallantree has enjoyed her best World Championships at her fourth attempt, bouncing back from a disappointing 10th in the 3m Synchro to win Mixed Team gold with Tom Daley then qualify for her first individual 3m final.

But having scored 305.10 to progress eighth from yesterday’s semi-final - and seal an Olympic quota place for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games in the process - she admitted it was a bittersweet ending to a memorable week.

“I am a little bit disappointed with that final," said Gallantree. "It didn’t go quite as hoped.

“It’s been a bit of an up and down week. The synchro didn’t go quite as I’d planned but then obviously there was a massive high with the team event and becoming world champion – something I thought would never happen.

“Then it was brilliant again yesterday in the individual to qualify an Olympic spot for Great Britain.

“I was very close to retiring after London but I’ve been getting better and better since then and achieved some things I never thought I would, which is brilliant.”

The Brit began her competition with her highest scoring drive, receiving 7s from the judges to score 63.00 for her forward 2 ½ somersaults, 1 twist piked.

Scores in the 50s for her second, third and fourth saw her slip down the leaderboard before she finished strongly with 60.75 for her inward 2 ½ somersaults with tuck.
