Laugher books spot in 3m Springboard final

30 Jul 2015

Jack Laugher second a Rio 2016 Olympic quota place as he eased into the 3m Springboard final at the Kazan 2015 World Championships.

The 20-year old was in the top 10 throughout the semi-final, ultimately finishing fifth on 490.90 with the top 12 progressing.

Chris Mears – who combined with Laugher for 3m Synchro bronze two days ago – was also in action, finishing 15th on 422.50 after missing his final dive.

But there were no errors for Laugher as he qualified for his second individual World Championship final, having finished eighth on his debut in 2011.

The young Brit – who has won three individual golds in the World Series this season - scored over 75 for all six of his dives and over 80 for four of them as he ensured Great Britain would have at least one spot in the men’s 3m Springboard at next year’s Olympic Games.

"It was a really good performance and I'm very happy because it's been a long day with six hours of competing," said Laugher, who won World Cup bronze and Commonwealth silver in the individual 3m last season.

"It's difficult for all the athletes but to make it through to the final in fifth is a great position to be in. I can apply the pressure to the other guys in the final which is good.

"I need to rest and recover for tomorrow now. It's a big competition but I've been at this stage before and I've already won a medal in this World Championships so I'm really looking forward to this final."
