Lee and Ward claim Mixed 10 Synchro Silver

14 May 2016

Matty Lee and Georgia Ward won silver in the Mixed 10m Synchro Final with an impressive performance at the LEN European Aquatics Championships in London.

The pair’s best dive, a Back 2 ½ Somersaults 1 ½ Twists Piked, came in the final round when they scored 75.84 which confirmed their podium position.

Lee and Ward finished with a score of 318.24 points.

Ward said: “It’s been crazy and it’s not quite sunk in yet that I’ve won three medals at these Championships.

“I always feel like I work hard, I’ve been enjoying my training. Moving to this pool and being with Jane [Figueiredo] my coach has been great, we’ve developed a really good relationship and bond, training and being around Tom [Daley].

“We really enjoy this event, we don’t come in looking for medals as we both have our individuals that we like to concentrate on so to come away with silver at the European Aquatics Championships is great.”

“I’ve got my individual tomorrow now, so I’m feeling confident and hoping to smash it in front of the home crowd,” Lee added.

Mixed 10m Synchro gold went to Iuliia Prokopchuk and Maksym Dolgov (323.70) and Russia’s Yulia Timoshinina and Nikita Schleiker went home with bronze (307.68).

Earlier in the session Grace Reid claimed bronze in the Women’s 3m Springboard at the LEN European Aquatics Championships.

A huge final dive by Reid, a Front 2 ½ Somersaults 1 Twist Piked achieved a score of 73.50, a six point improvement from the prelims.

Reid claimed her second medal of these championships in London, her final score of 328.55 placed her third overall in the final rankings.

Reid said: “I really don’t know what’s just happened. I put five dives together and I’ve walked away with the bronze medal.

“I prefer to just zone out from the score, put my headphones on and just concentrate on the dives, focusing on each one individually and somehow that just happened.

“I’ve been non-stop working for months behind the scenes and I’ve had great balance in my life and my diving’s really taken off in the past couple of weeks. I’ve got to maintain my form and keep training, I need to remain focused and take each step at a time. It’s been amazing to have my mum here and I’m grateful to the crowd for making so much noise.”

Rebecca Gallantree finished fourth in the overall rankings of the Women’s 3m event and recorded a final score of 323.25.

Gallantree said, “Fourth is definitely the hardest place to finish. I am disappointed but I know I shouldn’t be because I dived really well. A couple of my dives could have been better so it’s really frustrating to be in that fourth place.

“But I’m really happy for Grace because she’s dived so well today.

“I’ll just have to put this behind me and take the good things from it. My synchro dives today were really good so that puts me in a good place for tomorrow. I’m really excited to come back here because the crowd was absolutely fantastic.”

Grace was joined on the London 2016 podium by Uschi Freitag of the Netherlands who took silver with a score of 330.60, her countries first diving medal since 1995.

And gold went to Italy’s Tania Cagnotto, she claimed her 19th European gold with a score of 360.60.
