Athletes to get the nation active at the Park Run

18 Aug 2017

Our swimmers, divers and para-swimmer are joining 100 other UK Sport National Lottery funded Olympic and Paralympic athletes to encourage the nation to get active with #teamparkrun.

To thank the public for their support, through The National Lottery, of sport at all levels and for being right behind them every step of the way, Olympic and Paralympic heroes will be right behind participants of #teamparkrun on Saturday 19 August, acting as tail walkers at parkruns across the country.

Olympic and Paralympic athletes including London 2017 Athletics World Championship gold medallist Adam Gemili, London 2012 Olympic long jump champion Greg Rutherford and Rio 2016 Paralympic swimming champion Ellie Robinson are amongst those who will be tail walkers at parkruns on Saturday, ensuring that no one finishes last except them!

Following on from the UK’s biggest ever sports participation event I Am Team GB that saw nearly one million people take part, there will be 100 athletes appearing as tail walkers for #teamparkrun across Great Britain.

5k parkrun events take place in parks across the UK every Saturday at 9am in England and Wales and 9.30am in Scotland and Northern Ireland. They offer a free and easy way to take your first steps into becoming more active.

UK Sport Chair and five time Olympic medallist Dame Katherine Grainger said: “By playing The National Lottery, you have done an incredible job of supporting our Olympic and Paralympic athletes as well as grass roots sport in the UK.

“You’ve been right behind the athletes and now they want to get behind you to say thank you. Whether you’re thinking about taking your first steps towards a more active lifestyle or maybe you’re already a regular please come along to #teamparkrun on August 19.

“It’s a fantastic experience as I found out myself recently when I took part in my local parkrun as a tail walker.  There were so many people of all ages and fitness and they were all united by a great sense of enjoyment and personal goals. I have no doubt the athletes will enjoy it as much as everyone who comes along to get active and meet their local Olympians and Paralympians.”

Rio 2016 Paralympic swimming champion Ellie Robinson said: “It’s amazing. The National Lottery funding that they give us is so important. We wouldn’t be in the position to give back to them, if they didn’t help us.

“They’ve helped us so much, and this is a way we can help them back. It’s so important to be able to say thank you because we are all so grateful. We wouldn’t be doing what we do without the people that buy those tickets.

“Walking along at the back suits me! I think being at the back is quite nice because this will be the first time for a lot of other people as well.

“Maybe some of them won’t be as confident at a parkrun as others, so being at the back will be nice because I never would have been at the front myself.”

Rio 2016 Olympic swimming silver medallist Stephen Milne said: “parkrun’s a fun activity with other people, but also good for setting personal challenges.

“I do like to say thanks to everyone because there is quite a lot of local support and it’s getting bigger.

“I’m very grateful for the support and it’s great to have them cheering me on, so I like to be able to cheer them back, at things like this parkrun.

“I wouldn’t be able to swim without the funding from the National Lottery. Those people who buy the lottery tickets, so that we athletes have the opportunities to do what we do, deserve a big thank you.”
