Diving into a good book...

3 Mar 2022

It's the 25th anniversary of World Book Day, an annual celebration of reading for pleasure! To mark the occasion we asked a couple of podium potential swimmers on the World Class Programme to share their top reads.

Opening the pages to tell a story of what makes a good book in their eyes, Charlie Brown (Loughborough NC) and Sienna Robinson (City of Sheffield) share a quick insight into their reading habits.

What do you look for when grabbing a new book off the shelf?

I prefer factual books, as it gives you a wider perspective of the subject of reading. Every story needs an enticing introduction to grab the reader.

What's one read that you would recommend to others?

My book of choice is 'Good Vibes, Good Life' by Vex King. Started during lockdown 2020 and have always gone back to it. It’s about helping to become a better version of yourself and unlocking your potential, through radiating positive energy, practising self-care and prioritising your wellbeing.

Where's your favourite spot to just zone out and sink into a good book?

My favourite place would be on a beach somewhere hot!!

What do you look for when grabbing a new book off the shelf?

I enjoy fiction, but my go to is non-fictions. I love to read biographies in particular, as they show what inspired major events and how may historical figures persevered though their struggles such as Malala and Anne Frank. For me what makes a good book is when I feel unable to put a book down and feel a connection with the people you are reading about.

What's one read that you would recommend to others?

One of the favourite books I've read is 'My Own Story', by Emmeline Parkhurst. She was a suffragette, and played a key role in enabling women to get the right to vote. Written at the onset of the first World War. It showed her struggle and fight for Women to get the same rights as men.

Where's your favourite spot to just zone out and sink into a good book?

One of my favourite places to read is at home, in bed, just before I go to sleep as it allows me to relax as well as allowing my mind to switch off from my busy days at school and at the pool.
