Piers Martin appointed to British Swimming Board

23 Aug 2023

British Swimming are delighted to welcome Piers Martin as a new member of the British Swimming Board, starting in September.

Following a busy summer for the organisation, Piers, who is currently Head of Leadership & Academy Workforce Development at the Premier League, joins the board as an Independent Director to British Swimming - bringing a plethora of experience in sports management and consultancy.

In addition to his role with the Premier League, he is also currently Chair of UK Deaf Sport and DeaflympicsGB, Senior Independent Director of Surfing England, and Director of Podium Performance Group.

Having been an avid swimmer and water polo player and coach in the past, Piers also brings significant experience in the aquatics industry – holding roles such as National Development Manager for Water Polo and North-West Regional Director for Swim England (ASA) in the past, including a stint as Chair of the Para-Swimming Performance Pathway Group and Selection Panel at British Swimming.

He has also been a consultant for UK Sport and been in management positions for a variety of Olympic and Paralympic national governing bodies in his over 20-year professional career, and is a chartered fellow of the CIPD and a fellow of the RSA.

Speaking on his appointment, Piers highlighted the relevance of his relationship with the industry, and how this feeds in with his desire to grow the sport.

“I am privileged to be asked to serve on the Board of British Swimming - my life has been forged by the water and I have seen the power winning well in water can have in inspiring the next generation of young people and communities, and to removing barriers that may prevent anyone from entering the water and achieving their full potential.”

Chair of the British Swimming board, Karen Webb Moss, spoke of her delight regarding the appointment.

"It is truly a credit to British Swimming that we had such a level of interest from several different areas, making it such a difficult decision to select a new member for the board - we are delighted to now have Piers on board."

"Following a process which had an extraordinarily high calibre of candidates, we are very excited to appoint Piers, who has decades worth of experience in both sport and HR. He will enhance and add value to the board with his breadth of expertise in performance sport, with years of working in Olympic and Paralympic programmes across a wide range of disciplines."
