Cracking finals in store on day five at British Champs

9 Apr 2022

The British Swimming Championships look set to serve up some more eye-catching finals on day five after the morning heats got Saturday's action underway at Ponds Forge.

Tamryn Van Selm (Millfield) led home a nip-and-tuck heat in the Women's 400m Freestyle to qualify fastest ahead of Freya Anderson (Bath National Centre) and Nova Centurion's Freya Colbert, who will be either side of her in the centre lanes.

Both the Men's and Women's 200m Individual Medley finals will showcase some of Britain's most versatile swimmers. In the men's event, Olympic gold-medal-winning duo Tom Dean and Duncan Scott are sure to provide entertainment when they contest the final, 24 hours before they are likely to meet again in the Men's 200m Freestyle showpiece.

Dean qualified fastest for the medley final, with Scott third-fastest after the pair produced controlling morning swims. Separating them in the top three heats times was Loughborough University's James McFadzen, who looked good across his four laps.

Abbie Wood will be favourite to gain her third British title of the week in the Women's 200m Individual Medley, the David Hemmings-coached athlete doing what she needed to and some more in setting the morning pace, ahead of City of Sheffield's Candice Hall and Lily Booker, who trains at the Loughborough National Centre, like Wood.

Sprint freestyle specialist Ben Proud got his British Championships campaign underway in the Men's 50m Freestyle heats, ahead of what should be another cracker of a finale on Saturday evening. The British record holder was second fastest in the splash and dash qualifying, with Winchester City's Lewis Burras - fresh from 100m Freestyle triumph on Thursday - leading the way with a powerful 50m heats effort.

Medi Harris, meanwhile, will be eyeing up a British 50-100m Backstroke double after leading the pace in the 50m event after the morning heats. The Swansea University athlete put herself in lane four of the sprint event, ahead of Lauren Cox from Loughborough University and University of Stirling Olympic champion Kathleen Dawson.

Those not-to-be-missed finals get underway at 6pm, with Deep End Live coverage across the British Swimming YouTube channel. Before then, day five's afternoon heats start at 1pm.
