British Swimming and SASA East District are pleased to announce that the 2018 British Swimming Championships will take place in conjunction with the 2018 Edinburgh International Swim Meet.

The joint event will be hosted at the Royal Commonwealth Pool from Thursday 1st – Sunday 4th March 2018.  Training will be available for competitors on Wednesday 28th February in the competition pool.

The Edinburgh International Swim Meet has a long history in the international swimming calendar, having first taken place in the 1980s. After a three-year hiatus leading up to the 2014 Commonwealth Games, the Meet returned to the RCP in 2015 and has since become hugely popular, with a variety of international teams and world-leading athletes competing.

Commenting on the joint venture, British Swimming Head of Performance Services Adam Clarke said: “We are delighted to have the opportunity to work collaboratively with the SASA East District to stage a joint 2018 Edinburgh International and British Championships at a time that will also provide a perfect racing opportunity for home nation athletes as they prepare for the Commonwealth Games.”

SASA East District has partnered with the University of Edinburgh to develop the meet since its re-launch three years agoJim Aitken MBE, Director of Sport & Exercise, said: “We are delighted to once again be a main sponsor of the EISM and make our facilities available to the athletes coming to Edinburgh. It’s such a great opportunity to see world-class swimming on our doorstep, and it is even more tantalising this year as the nation’s best swimmers finalise preparations for the 2018 Commonwealth Games, while for junior athletes, it’ll be the selection meet for the 2018 European Junior Championships.  The extra dimension provided by the incorporation of the British Championships provides the opportunity to expand the scope of the event and champion elite swimming in the heart of Edinburgh. We are sure to see some super-fast swimming, and we can’t wait for it to start.”

Edinburgh’s Lord Provost, Frank Ross, said: “This event is set to be one of the most prestigious swimming championships at the Royal Commonwealth Pool since the flagship venue was refurbished. The British Swimming Championships have a long and established history, and the 2018 event, in conjunction with the Edinburgh International Swim Meet, is likely to be watched by thousands.”

Claire Rusack, Leisure Manager at The Royal Commonwealth Pool said: “Edinburgh Leisure is looking forward to hosting this exciting event at The Royal Commonwealth Pool. It will be another fantastic opportunity to share our fantastic aquatic facilities with some of the UK’s top swimming talent as well as their supporters and swimming fans alike. We wish all competitors the very best of luck for the event.”

Qualification times will be announced after the World Championships in Budapest. Swimmers meeting the qualification times will swim in the early morning heats.  Consideration times, including separate times for junior swimmers (male, born in 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003; female born in 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004), will also be published in August.
