LEN cancels 2020 European Junior Championships

1 May 2020

LEN, the governing body for aquatics in Europe, has today confirmed the cancellation of the 2020 European Junior Championships for all disciplines.

With the Championships having been postponed on 2nd April, LEN and the local organising committees had been looking into the feasibility of holding the championships later in 2020, pushed back from the original dates in July.

Given the ongoing nature of the global pandemic, it is becoming increasingly unrealistic to both reschedule and properly organise the Championships in late 2020, so all parties, with a heavy heart, agreed that cancellation was the only viable option. This applies not only to the Swimming and Diving events set to take place in Aberdeen and Edinburgh respectively, but also the Marathon Swimming, Artistic Swimming and Water Polo events.

Naturally this will come as a disappointment to the athletes, especially those in their final year of junior eligibility, as well as teams and federations and local organising partners who have been looking forward to this event, however, given the ongoing impact corona virus is having across the continent organisers were left with no other option.

LEN plans to re-establish the Junior Championships in 2021, however at this early stage no further detail on dates or venues is available. LEN will communicate an update as soon as one is available, but at this present time the health, safety and wellbeing of everyone in the aquatics community is our number one priority.
