The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has announced that three new events will be added to the swimming programme for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games including the 4x100m Mixed Medley relay.
The Games in three years’ time will also see the introduction of the Men’s 800m Freestyle and the Women’s 1500m Freestyle races.
Commenting on the announcement British Swimming Chief Executive David Sparkes said: “The addition of these new events to the Olympic programme is a welcome move and one we will support and encourage our athletes to prepare for.”
IOC president Thomas Bach commented on the announcement saying that the addition of new events will make the Games, “more youthful, more urban and include more women.”
Great Britain are currently both world champions and world record holders in the mixed relay event.
