Ten British Open Water stars are headed to Portugal to take part in the Setubal FINA 10km World Cup on 28 June
Tom Allen will be looking to repeat his performance having taken gold in the opening round in Argentina earlier this year.
The Swansea swimmer is on good form having won the Great North Swim at Lake Windermere earlier this month in a time of 54:10.9.
Joining Allen will be British 1500m Freestyle ChampionDaniel Fogg and Loughborough team mate Jack Burnell who will be aiming to continue his good form following wins in the 5km and 7km BEST Fest Meets last month.
Burnell said: “The Argentina 10km at the beginning of the year was a bit of a disappointment but I’ve learned from that and have hopefully improved my racing.
“The BEST Fest wins in Mallorca were a good confidence boost and since then I’ve been putting in some large sets and working on speed bursts to help with the unpredictability of open water races.
“Setubal will certainly be a challenge but I’m looking forward to seeing where I am at the moment, especially with the European Championships only six weeks away.”
Alice Dearing and Lauren Walton will also be competing in Portugal after great swims in Lake Windermere. Dearing swam a 58:41.1 to top the junior race and finish second place overall while Walton finished third in 58:51.6.
Open Water Swimming lead Bernie Dietzig said: “The Setubal 10km is one of the toughest races of the year outside of the European Championships. It is very competitive and conditions will be hard with strong currents and temperatures of between 18-19 degrees.
“The athletes heading to Portugal were selected following performances at the British Gas Swimming Championships and the Great North Swim. As such we have a good mixture of strong open water and pool swimmers.
“Lake Windermere was a great selection meet. The competition was very healthy and the course really pushed the swimmers so it is a very welcome addition to the programme.”
