Pavoni aims for consistency in Kazan

After arriving on the senior scene in 2010, Pavoni claimed his first senior international medal last summer when he won two - silver and bronze in the 400m and 200m individual medley respectively at the European Championships.

And after getting a taste of success, Pavoni has an eye on more starting with the World Championships which get underway in Kazan on August 2.

The 24-year-old has appeared at two previous World Championships and intends to play a decisive role this time around, when he contests the 200m and 400m individual medley.

“It all comes around quite quickly, training has been going really well, it’s been hard work but hopefully it will be worth it,” he said.

“This will be my third World Championships, my first I narrowly got into the final and finished eighth, it was great for me on my Worlds debut but then the next one I was the opposite and just missed out on the final.

“That was a big disappointment. It’s definitely my aim to get back into the final and hopefully progress a bit closer to the medals.

“I’ve been around the senior scene quite a few years now, I want to start repeating those leading performances on a more consistent basis.

“Everyone is striving for the medals so obviously it makes it very hard, but I enjoy being up on the podium and I want to repeat that.”

The World Championships hold particular significance this year with Rio 2016 quickly coming into focus on the horizon.

Although Pavoni believes it would be foolish to think too far ahead with such a big Championships coming up first.

“It’s important for yourself to know that you are on the right road towards Rio next year,” he added.

“But in terms of the competition, I won’t be looking to Rio until after this season. The Worlds is the main focus and performing there well.

“The last 18 months, British swimmers have really come on. We had a great Commonwealth Games, everyone did really well and continued that onto the Europeans.”
