Richards breaks British record on final night in Sheffield

Royal Wolverhampton School swimmer Matthew Richards broke his second British age group record of the week to bring the British Summer Championships to a close in Sheffield.

Richards stopped the clock at 1:50.84 to lower the 15 years record and claimed the gold in the 16 years final.

He was flanked in the podium by the City of Leicester’s William Bell and Ioan Evans of the City of Cardiff, silver and bronze respectively for them.

Men’s 200m Freestyle

Stockport Metro claimed gold in the Men’s 19/Over years 200m Freestyle, he successfully repeated the process after he qualified fastest from the morning heats.

Loughborough University swimmer Fraser Minnican was second to the wall for the silver medal and Richmond Dale’s Thomas Fowler was third.

Harry Constantine came from behind in 17/18 years final and edged Millfield’s Jakob Goodman in silver to take the title.

Luke Turley of Hatfield SC served up a personal best swim of 1:50.84 for the bronze medal.

There was no stopping Northampton’s Edward Mildred, he claimed his eighth medal of the week in the 200m Freestyle 15-year-old age group. Mildred posted a time of 1:55.13, a new PB, for the win.

Portsmouth Northsea swimmer Pietro Forconi touched second for the silver and accompanying him on the podium was Archie Price of Barnet Copthall in third.

In the Men’s 13/14 years final of the 200m Freestyle, Derventio swimmer Jacob Whittle secured himself top spot on the podium. He touched first in a time of 1:57.97, a new lifetime best for gold.

The silver went to the City of Liverpool swimmer Tyriese Smith and bronze to Michael Klimaszewski of Hatfield SC.

Women’s 100m Breaststroke

Stockport Metro’s Katie Matts claimed yet another gold medal of the 2018 summer champs, a PB of 1:07.92 sealed her the 19/Over years title. Edinburgh University swimmer Kara Hanlon was second and Loughborough University’s Beth Aitchison picked up another medal, bronze.

The 17/18 years finals final saw an incredibly close finish between Tatianna Belonogoff of Guildford City and Annabel Guye-Johnson of RTW Monson, just 0.05 separating them, but it was Belonogoff that came off the victor, the European junior champion over the 50m event, completed the swim in a new lifetime best of 1:08.63.

Guye-Johnson did a season's best swim of 1:08.63 ahead of bronze medallist, Katie Robertson of South Ayrshire.

Kayla Van Der Merwe was back on the summer championship podium as she took the gild in the 16-year-old breaststroke final, a personal best of 1:10.50 for her.

Rebecca Clynes of the City of Leeds was the silver medallist and Maia Hall of Ellesmere College clocked a seasons best of 1:12.30 for bronze.

Angharad Evans of Ellesmere College, coached by Alan Bircher, was the victor of the 15 years final. She completed the two-lap race ahead of a pair of Plymouth Leander swimmers, Lana Broekhoven and Lucia Grant, who tied for silver on 1:11.95.

RTW Monson claimed their first gold of the night on day six in the 13/14 years 100m Breaststroke thanks to Jemimah Berkeley. City of Bristol swimmer Georgia Gussey posted a new PB of 1:12.10 for silver and bronze went to Olivia Herron also in a new best time of 1:12.30.

Men’s 200m Backstroke

It was a clean sweep of the medals for Loughborough University in the 19/Over years final of the Men’s 200m Backstroke. Callum Barrett was first to the wall in 2:00.72 for the gold, silver went to James McFazden and Daniel Hall rounded off the top three for the bronze.

Home pool gold for Charlie Brown of the City of Sheffield, he shaved off 0.22 of a second off his previous best time to take the gold in 2:02.55.

Jamie Scholes of the City of Peterborough held on for the bronze medal behind Ellesmere College swimmer Joseph Small in the silver medal position.

Charlie Hutchison of Ellesmere College powered down the final lap of the Men’s 16 years 200m Backstroke final to post a PB of 2:08.56 for the summer championships gold and 2018 title.

City of Cardiff’s Ioan Evans finished with the silver medal and Oliver Fairman of Poole settled for the bronze.

City of Oxford swimmer Nicholas Skelton dished up a personal best of 2:08.72 for the 15 years gold medal. Pierce Greening of Cockermouth picked up the silver and Joshua Skinner of Nova Centurion also reduced his best time to 2:09.50 for bronze.

In the 13/14 years age group final it was Tigers Jersey swimmer Isaac Dodds made it to the wall first for the gold medal. Second to the touch was Hendrik Van Der Leest of Woking SC and Jan Poulton will take the bronze medal back to Wycombe.

Women’s 100m Butterfly

The 100m Butterfly was the final individual event of summer champs 2018 for the women and in the 19/Over age group final the gold medal was won by Plymouth Leander’s Laura Stephens. Tain Bruce of Edinburgh university completed her swim in second place and Harriet Jones of the City of Cardiff was third.

It was the first swim under 60 seconds for Keanna Macinnes of Heart of Midlothian, her time of 59.56 secured her the gold medal.

City of Leeds swimmer Ciara Schlosshan was the silver medallist and bronze went to Tori Sopp of Wirral Metro.

Mount Kelly swimmer Kaylee Dekker went 0.01 quicker that her finals qualifying time to win gold in 1:01.61. It was joint silver Pia Murry of Ellesmere College and Duru Tanir of Plymouth Leander. The time of 1:01.66 was a seasons best for Murray and a personal best for Tanir.

It was PBs for all medallists in the 15-year-old final with just 0.06 the difference between gold and silver. Maisie Elliot of the City of Leicester had gold in 1:00.83 with silver going to Betsy Wizard of Northampton, her time 1:00.89.

Sara Kalawska joined them on the podium for the bronze, she posted a finish time of 1:02.58.

Colchester’s Sophie Freeman sealed herself the gold in the 13/14 years final of the 100m Butterfly. Silver returns to Cardiff Rebecca De Torres touched second and bronze belonged to Lucy Grieve of South Ayrshire.

Medley Relays

 After three hundred metres in the Women's 14/16 years 4x100m Medley Relay final it was all to play for and then at the changeover, Plymouth Leander's Oriana Noel turned on the afterburners to pull away from the rest of the field for gold.

The quartet from Ellesmere College were fastest after the heats but had to settle for silver after 8 laps of the Ponds Forge pool. The battle for bronze was a close one, just 0.04 the difference between at the wall, and it was the team from the City of Peterborough that came out on top to finish third.

Stockport Metro claimed the final female medal of the 2018 summer champs, they carried their form through from the heats and claimed the gold in a time of 4:10.01.

The silver medal will remain in the steel city as Sheffield A touched for silver and bronze went the team from Guildford City.

Millfield School pulled away from the field for gold in the 14/16 years Men's 4x100m Medley Relay. Silver was clinched by Plymouth Leander their time at the touch 3:57.87 and the bronze medallists of the City off Cardiff finished in a time of 3:57.88, just 0.01 separated them.

More than three seconds of clear water gave Sheffield a comfortable win in the closing race of the event, the Men's 17/Over 4x100m Medley Relay. The city of Manchester A team were the silver medallists and bronze went to Swansea Aquatics.
