Thompson in seventh heaven

30 Jul 2017

Shiverers swimmer Joel Thompson rounded off a golden week by increasing his gold medal haul to seven on the final night of the British Summer Championships 2017 in Sheffield.

The 16-year-old secured gold in both the Men’s 200m Freestyle and 50m Butterfly 16 years finals to add to the five titles he won in the first five days.

Thompson’s first gold of the night came in the Men’s 200m Freestyle 16 years final. He touched ahead of silver medallist Charlie Poole (City of Leicester) and bronze medallist Billy Pettit (Northampton) to clinch his sixth title of the meet.

Just over an hour later, Thompson was back on top of the podium, this time for victory in the Men’s 50m Butterfly 16 years final. He stopped the clock just ahead of Chester Lee Street’s Alex Mason and Derwentside’s Daniel Morley to take his gold medal tally to seven.

Thompson’s other gold medals have come in the 16 year finals of the Men’s 50m Breaststroke, 100m Freestyle, 100m Butterfly and the 200m and 400m Individual Medley.

London Aquatics’ Jarvis Parkinson was another swimmer to add to his gold medal haul on day six as he secured his second gold in as many nights in the Men’s 200m Freestyle 19+ years final.

There was nothing to separate the touches of Luke Howdle (City of Sheffield) and Cameron Kurle (Bath University) with both swimmers taking silver.

Victory in the Women’s 100m Breaststroke 19+ years final was secured by Edinburgh University’s Corrie Scott as she edged ahead of Beth Aitchison (Loughborough University) and Katie Matts (Stockport Metro) to take gold.

Imogen Clark (Loughborough University) won her third title of the week, taking the win and gold in the Women’s 100m Breaststroke 17/18 years age group. Annabel Guye-Johnson of RTW Monson took silver and bronze went to Amy Bell of City of Sheffield.

City of Cardiff’s Xavier Mohammed was fastest in the Men’s 200m Backstroke 19+ years final. Mohammed set a new personal best to hold off the challenge of Joseph Hulme (Bath University) and Daniel Cross (Loughborough University), who finished second and third respectively.

Rachael Kelly (Loughborough University) was first to the wall to secure gold in the Women’s 100m Butterfly 19+ years final. Kelly touched ahead of Edinburgh University’s Tain Bruce and City of Cardiff’s Harriet Jones to clinch the 19+ years title.

Emily Large (Newcastle) was victorious in the Women’s 100m Butterfly 16 years final to complete the 50m, 100m and 200m Butterfly trifecta. Silver went to Keanna Macinnes of Heart of Midlothian, while Poole’s Jasmine McCrea took bronze.

City of Sunderland’s Adam Taylor repeated his 2015 and 2016 success in the Men’s 50m Butterfly 19+ years final as he secured gold ahead of Adam Fawl (Blackpool Aquatics) and Calum Bain (University of Stirling) to successfully defend his title.

The six days of competition were rounded off with four exhilarating relay finals. First up was the Women’s 14/16 years 4x100m Medley relay with the quartet from Heart of Midlothian victorious ahead of the City of Leeds and Millfield School.

The Women’s 17 years and over final saw Loughborough University take control of the race in the opening three legs. The City of Sheffield cut Loughborough’s lead in the final 100m, but Loughborough had built up a big enough advantage to seal the win.

Loughborough University were also on top of the podium in the Men’s 17+ years 4x100m Medley relay. There was not much between the Loughborough quartet and Millfield School A team at the halfway stage, before Loughborough pulled away on the final two legs.

The Men’s 14/16 4x100m Medley produced such an enthralling race that the top two teams could not be separated with both City of Cardiff and Guildford City claiming gold. Cardiff led after 200m, but Guildford came back strongly in the final two legs and the two teams could not be separated at the touch.
