The Super Final in Xi’an, China, brought the 2025 World Aquatics Artistic Swimming World Cup series to a close, with Ranjuo Tomblin and Isabelle Thorpe producing four medals between them for Great Britain.

In a quick turnaround of travel for Tomblin and Thorpe – following their successful recent showing at the European Aquatics championships as part of the Great Britain team – the pair headed out to China for the Super Final conclusion to the World Aquatics Artistic Swimming World Cup series which has held high-class legs in Paris (France), Somabay (Egypt) and Markham (Canada) in 2025.

Continuing the momentum of winning a European silver together in their debut as a pair at the beginning of June, Thorpe and Tomblin showed further evidence of their promising developing partnership with a score of 206.8375 on their Mixed Duet Technical routine for bronze, before following up with a second medal of the same colour in their first-ever competitive Mixed Duet Free performance together.

Olympic duet silver medallist Izzy Thorpe and European solo champion Ranjuo Tomblin were awarded a combined score of 262.6855 in premiering their Free routine which focused on the conflict between light and dark.

“I'm very happy with our performances,” said Tomblin

“Obviously, there were a few mistakes in some routines, so it's all about working hard to improve the routines and the impression and hopefully next time in Singapore, the medal colour will be different.”

While Thorpe added: “It's been really nice swimming with Ranjuo. It's a definite experience for me, because I’ve only ever swam the female duet, so it's my first time swimming a mixed duet.

“For sure we want to try and win a medal [at Worlds], so we're going to try our best to get our scores up as much as we can, to get the best result we can.”

Having been ever-present on the world cup campaign in 2025, Tomblin impressed further with Men’s Solo Free silver and Men’s Solo Tech bronze at the Super Final – taking his personal tally to nine medals in total throughout the series.

Reflecting on how the year has gone so far as he approaches ambitions for the summer, Tomblin said:

“I’ve been building these routines throughout the season, competing at the World Cups and I’ve been gaining great experience so hopefully I can bring all that together for the World Championships.”

With plenty of positives to take from Great Britain’s efforts in Xi’an, Artistic Swimming Manager Karen Thorpe said:

“Coming out here entered into four events the main objective was to do our best job in gathering points ready for the world championships in Singapore, whilst giving both Ranjuo and Izzy the opportunity to swim and gain experience in showing themselves as a new duet pairing.

“We’re really happy with the performances and we felt that they did exceptionally well swimming together as a new pairing. For Izzy being back in after the Olympic medal last year, having had an extended bit of time off and now starting back in a new event with someone other than Kate [Shortman] it has been quite a difference but an experience she’s enjoying, while for Ranjuo it’s continuing to challenge and grow his ability – he has such a bright future ahead of him and has done so well this season.

“It's brilliant for Great Britain that we’ve been in the medals now in the male and the mixed events solidly all year, so it should stand us in good steads for this summer’s world championships.”
