Barrow picks up top sports award

31 Jan 2017

Olympian Sarah Barrow has been named Sports Personality of the Year by the Plymouth Herald at their annual awards presentation.

Barrow represented Great Britain at every level of the sport including two Olympic Games and three World Championships and three Commonwealth Games.

In 2016 she competed at the Rio 2016 World Cup and showed her determination to secure her individual place at the Games when she qualified in Sheffield.

Herald editor Paul Burton said: "The sports awards are, rightly, all about achievement, but that doesn't mean just winning events and coming back from competitions with a medal, although obviously that is important.

"A winner can also be someone who competes through the pain and doesn't give in to circumstances, as Sarah has done.

"She demonstrated massive personality to make sure she signed off from a successful diving career on a high, and surely that is what this award is all about."

Plymouth Diving’s Head Coach Andy Banks and Coach Marc Holdsworth were also winners as they claimed the Coach of the Year gong.

Matthew Dixon, who won bronze at the World Junior Diving Championships, won Young Sports Personality of the Year.
