Couch and Toulson claim gold in Edinburgh

Olympians Tonia Couch and Lois Toulson won the gold medal in the 10m Synchro on the penultimate day of action at the British Diving Championships in Edinburgh. 

Couch (Plymouth Diving) and Toulson (City of Leeds) showed their skill to sit in a strong position after the required dives with a score of 92.40.

They scored 74.70 for their Front 3 ½ Somersaults piked for their opening optional dive and completed the competition with a score of 307.26.

“We dived pretty well today,” Couch said. “We weren’t really focusing on where we finished but how we performed today. I think we did a good job so we’re really pleased. I was a little bit nervous as I feel like I’ve not been diving well but it was nice to be next to Lois and I feel like I’m better when I’m next to her.”

Tanya Watson and Lucy Hawkins (Southampton Diving) won the silver with a total of 256.74 points.

Brothers Jack and Ross Haslam won gold in the 3m Synchro with a strong performance that saw them score over 70 points for their optional dives.

The City of Sheffield divers scored a total of 98.40 for their required dives which their best dive came in the final round with a score of 77.70 for their Reverse 1 ½ Somersaults 3 ½ Twists piked.

“That was one of our best performances in terms of score,” Jack said. “To score over 70 points on all of our optional dives is great so we’re really happy with that. It was pretty amazing competing with my brother.”

“Not going to lie I was really nervous going into that,” Ross said. “It was a really intense competition I think because we are synchro partners and brothers and rivals it’s a tough one and you know there’s very little room for error.”

Freddie Woodward (City of Sheffield) and James Heatly (Edinburgh Diving) took silver with a points score of 381.63.

Toulson and Dan Goodfellow lead the charge after the prelims of the women’s 10m and men’s 3m.
