10 May 2016

On the second day of the LEN European Aquatics Championships, Tonia Couch and Lois Toulson finished fifth in the 10m Synchro.

Couch and Toulson performed an excellent set of dives in the first four rounds to see them going into the final round in first place.

A missed dive in the final round saw the pair drop down the ranks to finish fifth with a score of 267.72.

Couch said: “We’re a little bit gutted tonight but she’s [Toulson] such an amazing diver and we’ve got so much more to give. We’re going to let that one go and just prepare for the summer ahead.”

Gold went to Germany’s Maria Kurjo and My Phan with a points total of 279.75, silver went to Ganna Kranoshlyk and Vlada Tatsenko of Ukraine (278.01) and bronze to Hungary’s Gyongyver Villo Kormos and Zsofia Reisinger (274.74).

The Men’s 1m Final featured two British divers with Freddie Woodward and Jordan Houlden, both making European Aquatics Championship debuts.

Woodward finished seventh overall and recorded his best ever international score in the 1m of 378.20 points.

“There’s lots of positives to take from that final, I felt strong and I’m looking forward to my next and main event the 3m on Thursday,” said Woodward.

Houlden, at just 17 the youngest athlete to line up for the final, finished ninth and recorded 368.55 points which is his highest ever score in the 1m event.

“It’s been a great achievement, to come to a senior event like this and make the final is great. I’ll definitely remember this one,” added Houlden.

Ukraine’s Illya Kvasha claimed his sixth 1m title with a score of 439.70, silver went to Italy’s Giovanni Tocci (414.30) and bronze was taken by Constantin Blaha of Austria (402.55).
