Tom Daley and Grace Reid won Britain’s first ever mixed 3m Synchro gold medal with victory on the third day of the LEN European Aquatics Championships 2016.
Having just competed in the Women’s 1m final, Reid teamed up with London-based diver Daley in just a week old partnership to compete together and win Britain’s first gold medal of the Championships.
Daley and Reid started the competition well with a score of 100.80 points and went on to score their highest mark, 76.36, on their front 3 ½ Somersaults piked.
The British pair remained in medal contention throughout the final to finish on top of the rankings with a final score of 321.06 and win Britain’s first ever European mixed 3m Synchro gold medal.
Daley said: “I don’t really know what just happened, Grace and I got put together about ten days ago and have done maybe five training sessions together.
“To be Europeans Champions on a board that I don’t even train on it amazing, I’m just over the moon with it.”
“I honestly can’t believe what just happened, lucky pool I’m thinking,” said an ecstatic Reid.
“Today was a really good day for me, there’s a huge amount for me to take away with me and my main event the 3m is coming up on Saturday so plenty more to think about.”
Daley and Reid were joined on the podium by Italy’s Tania Cagnotto and Maicol Verzotto in silver (308.70) and Russia’s Nadezhda Bazhina and Nikita Shleiker (305.28)
The Women’s 1m springboard final also took place, with two British divers Reid and Katherine Torrance.
Reid dived consistently across the five dives to finish seventh overall and record a points total of 262.25.
Torrance finished 12th overall in the rankings with a closing score of 216.20.
“A first senior international final for me and it’s all about experience and I feel like I gained lots of it,” said Torrance.
“I didn’t quite go to plan for me but there’s still plenty of positives to take from it.
“Next for me is the British Diving Championships and then hopefully Junior Europeans in the summer so plenty for me to aim for and work towards.”
Italy led the way in the Women’s 1m, they claimed both gold and silver for Tania Cagnotto (282.15) and Elena Bertocchi (281.30).
Bronze went to Nadezhda Bazhina of Russia with a score of 280.75.
