Divers sign off with 10 medals in Helsinki

Britain’s junior divers finished in fourth place at the European Junior Diving Championships in Helsinki, finishing behind Russia, Germany and Spain.

The team secured 10 medals in total with two golds, two silvers and six bronze medals, but came behind the Germans in the table who only earned five medals, but picked up three golds.

On the penultimate day of competition Tyler Humphreys won his second individual medal of the meet – this time a bronze in the Boys B 3m event. He scored 423.90, 35.40 behind the overall winner Russian Maksim Malofeev. Benjamin Cutmore finished 6th with 403.25.

Josie Zillig, in her first international competition also picked up a bronze in the 10m B Girls event. Having struggled with a reverse 2½ somersault dive in tuck position in the heats, she worked on it for the final and improved by 37 points from her earlier performance. She picked up 315.70 just 5.2 behind Romanian Nicoleta Muscalu and 16 behind Italian Maia Biginelli.

Anthony Harding, competing on his 18th birthday, and Oliver Crompton were unlucky not to add to the medal tally in the Boys 3m synchro. Having led the competition for the first four rounds, and only needing 63 points to take gold, they missed their final dive and came fourth overall on 278.40. The top three places were ultimately separated by just 1.29 points.

The final day’s competition Lucas Thomson picked up a silver in the Boys platform event. In his first Junior International, he finished the required dives 10 points clear of the eventual winner Ruslan Ternovoi of Russia.

Having moved from first place to fifth after a dropped Inward 3 ½ Somersaults, he worked his way back up to second place, scoring 489.65, behind the Russian on 563.20.

In the Girls 3m Springboard Maria Papworth, who had been battling a thigh strain finished 9th with Holly Waxman in 8th.
