Edinburgh ready for National Diving Cup action

1 Feb 2023

The stage is set for the country’s top divers to kickstart their 2023 season, as Edinburgh plays host to the British National Diving Cup, with the action beginning today (Thursday 2nd February).

Following on from what was a successful event in Plymouth last year, laying the platform for the history-making year that followed for British Diving, the National Diving Cup promises to continue in the same fashion, with a plethora of athletes with success on the international stage set to light up the Royal Commonwealth Pool for the four-day competition.

The event will provide an important competition opportunity for athletes from across Great Britain early in the season, ahead of future domestic events later in the year and key internationals such as July's World Aquatics Championships and the European Junior Championships the same month.

For athletes targeting Paris 2024 and beyond, the event will also act as a welcome opportunity for them to test themselves against senior counterparts and put into competitive practice the dive lists that they will have worked on and fine-tuned with their coaches through hours and hours of training.

Divers set to feature at this year's National Diving Cup include 2016 Olympic champion Jack Laugher, who will feature in the Men's 3m Springboard and 3m Synchro events, the latter alongside his City of Leeds Diving teammate Anthony Harding – the pair taking part in the final on Saturday at 3.45pm as they look to build on a memorable maiden year together that brought Worlds, European and Commonwealth medals.

Laugher’s former synchro partner and 2022 3m Springboard champion Dan Goodfellow is also back for the individual event, the prelims of which begin on Friday at 10am, with the finals at 3:45pm.

Edinburgh-born Grace Reid, who took medals at all three major international competitions last year, also returns to defend her title in the Women’s 3m Springboard – her sole event at the meet. The prelims for the event get underway on Sunday at 10am, with the finals at 3pm. Desharne Bent-Ashmeil and Kat Torrance are among others on the start list, the latter targeting a successful return to competition as she continues her comeback from a shoulder injury that curtailed her 2022 campaign.

On the same day as the Women’s 3m Springboard event is the Men’s 10m Platform. Last year’s champion in the event, Noah Williams, also returns to the platform for the event, with it now being his sole focus after synchro partner Matty Lee withdrew due to a wrist injury.

Last year’s Women’s 10m Platform champion Emily Martin is also back for 2023, as the Commonwealth medallist competes again in the individual contest and the Women’s 10m Synchro, with her Dive London teammate  Robyn Birch. The prelims for the women’s platform begin on the Saturday at 10am, with the finals starting at 3:45pm.

Also taking part in the Women’s 10m Synchro is the new pairing of Lois Toulson and Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix, as they look to build on their impressive performances from 2022 ahead of the major competitions this year. The men’s and women’s 10m Synchro finals open the competition on Thursday evening, with the session beginning at 6:30pm.

Tickets are still available for the event, and can be purchased here.
