Hunt ready to take cliff dive plunge

28 May 2018

The Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series 2018 kicks off this weekend in Texas, with Britain’s six-time world champion Gary Hunt hoping to add to improve on last year’s second-place finish.

Having taken part in every World Series stop, and winning more than half of them Gary is the most successful cliff diver ever. Here he tells us why you should be tuning in to one of the globe’s most spectacular sports.

The 33-year-old said: “One of the best things about cliff diving is you aren’t always stuck in a pool, you get to see the world and dive from some amazing sights.

“Some that stick in my mind are Yucatan in Mexico in the cenotes, jumping from the bridge in Mostar, from a building in Dubai at night time. There’s some really exciting events happening.”

Gary, who was also World Champion in 2015, is one of 10 men and six women battling it out for this year’s title, including fellow Brit Blake Aldridge.

He added: “The next series should be an exciting one – Jonathan Paredes has obviously shown he is a force to be reckoned with. Blake Aldridge is really starting to get his dives down now and watch out for the American SteveLoBue I think he’s got something new up his sleeve.

“For me I’ll be changing tactics a bit this year, I’ve been struggling with my hardest dive, the front triple with four and a half twists, so I’m going to take a step back in difficulty and focus a bit more on precision this year.”

The schedule for this year’s Red Bull World Series is:

2nd June – Hell’s Gate, Texas

30th June - Princess of Spain suspension bridge, Bilbao

14th July – Sao Miguel, Azores

5th August – Sisikon, Switzerland

25th August – Opera House, Copenhagen

8th September – Stari Most bridge, Mostar

23rd September – Polignano a Mare, Italy
